Nanomaterials and Advanced Technologies

Ivo Kuřitka specializes in materials design and the synthesis of nano- and micro-fillers for (nano)composites, the preparation of thin polymer and nanocomposite films, and their characterization, drawing on expertise in materials chemistry, electrochemistry and photochemistry, spectroscopy, and a range of analytical techniques. His current research focuses on two main areas: materials for carbon dioxide capture and transformation, and materials and their testing under specific conditions relevant to aerospace and space applications. These two domains define the research direction in the field of nanomaterials, for which he serves as the academic guarantor.

He is the author of dozens of articles in peer-reviewed journals (H-index > 30) and has made significant contributions to applied research (incl. five patents, 39 functional samples, two prototypes, and others). He has applied his broad knowledge as principal investigator or co-investigator in more than thirty basic and applied research projects (e.g., GA ČR, TA ČR, MŠMT, MPO, and others). He also collaborates with industry partners on issues directly related to the practical application of polymer materials and composites.

His teaching activities are primarily focused on lecturing and supervising doctoral students in the Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials program, which he also coordinates, and previously in the Technology of Macromolecular Substances program. To date, he has supervised more than thirty successfully defended Master’s and Bachelor’s theses, as well as over twenty successfully defended doctoral dissertations.

Biomaterials

Petr Humpolíček focuses on research in the fields of biomaterials, cell biology, and genetics. He integrates these areas through the study and testing of material biocompatibility. His specialization lies in the development of biomimetic materials, particularly those based on conductive polymers.

Petr Humpolíček has served, or is currently serving, as the principal investigator on six projects funded by the Czech Science Foundation. These projects systematically explore the interactions between materials—especially electrically conductive and anisotropic ones—and cellular models. Special emphasis is placed on simulating in vivo conditions within in vitro experiments, as well as on the development and application of alternative methods for biocompatibility testing.

As part of the SurfToGreen project, funded by the HORIZON-JU-CBE-2023 program, he and his colleagues are also working on the development of a new portfolio of fully bio-based surfactants for key industrial applications.

Under his supervision, more than thirty master's and bachelor's theses have been successfully defended. He has served as a supervisor for five successfully defended doctoral dissertations and as a consultant for four additional PhD theses.

He actively collaborates with numerous international and Czech institutions, notably Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, the University of Auckland in New Zealand, the Jožef Stefan Institute in Slovenia, Åbo Akademi University in Finland, the University of Milan in Italy, and the University of Angers in France.

OP TAK UTCP EN

OP TAK Operational Program Technologies and Applications for Competitiveness
University technology centre for practise (UTCP) Activity B
Registration number of the project: CZ.01.01.01/04/23_041/0005160

Brief description of the project:

The aim of the project is to build a new open R&I infrastructure in the existing premises of the CPS and equip it with an instrument infrastructure for the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises with innovation potential.

The UTCP project generally aims to increase the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises operating mainly in the Zlín agglomeration carrying out their own research and innovation activities, or start-ups that create innovative products or services based on new technologies or apply them on a pilot basis.

Project objectives and activities

The R&I infrastructure being built in the form of the UTCP is designed as an open infrastructure that targets 3 categories/types of focus, which define both the area of activities, but also already assume the inclusion of specific companies in these categories according to their defined needs.

Specifically, these are the categories of services defined as follows:

Segment I: Environmental innovation.

Segment II: Innovation of raw materials sources.

Segment III: Optimization of materials and processes.

The above-mentioned focuses correspond to the long-term focus of the applicant's R&D work in the field of polymer sciences, manufacturing processes, materials engineering and biotechnology.

The University Technology Center for Practice (UTCP) project – Activity b is co-financed by the European Union.
