Environmental Technologies

The field of research in environmental materials and technologies includes the development, characterization and processing of polymer systems in particular that are capable of specific interactions with the environment, such as the ability of a material to undergo biodegradation or, on the contrary, resistance to pathogenic microorganisms.

Another area of ​​interest of the research group is the use of natural and renewable resources, specifically biologically active substances, biomass or inorganic components, for further application in practice with the expectation of new added value of the product. Research activities include detailed characterizations of the developed materials, which in this case requires a multidisciplinary approach comprising areas of scientific disciplines such as chemistry, physics, microbiology, ecology and the necessary processing technologies.

Within the Centre of Polymer Systems and cooperation with practice, the research group also ensures the operation and professional development of analytical and microbiological laboratories.

Research into environmental technologies of polymer materials for sustainable development represents the effective evaluation of available biomass components with added value and the careful management of waste polymer materials leading to the creation of new products or the use of appropriate recycling technologies aimed at reducing waste within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and principles green chemistry (GCH).

Research group

Biomaterials

Biomaterials combine advanced material properties with biocompatibility. The research group is therefore interested in preparing smart materials that can respond to external stimuli, such as electric fields, by combining synthetic polymers, biopolymers and other materials such as metals or ceramics. The prepared materials are then tested by the lab for biocompatibility by studying the interaction with eukaryotic and prokaryotic model systems. The instrumentation allows testing of a wide range of biological properties of materials, from basic parameters such as cytotoxicity through interaction at biological interfaces to the growth of scaffolds in bioreactors. Tumour or immortalized lines or stem cells are used as model systems. In addition to biomaterials, the group also tests cosmetics, e.g. for photo-toxicity or transdermal absorption.

The main aim of the project is research into composite biomaterials (CB), namely:
I) "on-demand" responsive CBs with potential in regeneration (in situ or de novo) and monitoring mainly of heart and nervous tissue,

Nanomaterials and Advanced Technologies

The field of research and development of nanomaterials and advanced technologies includes the preparation of structurally and functionally hierarchically organized hybrid functional materials and structures that are energy efficient. For these purposes phenomena occurring only at the nanometre level are used. They can be applied in plastics, electronics, sensors, (photo) catalysis, medicine, hygiene and elsewhere.
Research activities require a multidisciplinary approach and include: understanding of physical and chemical phenomena at molecular level; chemical synthesis of materials (nanoparticles of semiconductors, metals, CND, hybrid) or their modification (CNT, graphene / graphene oxide, polymers); detailed characterization of structure, morphology and properties; technology and sample preparation, i.e. functional materials or production of simple devices such as powders, thin films, coatings, diodes, sensors, catalytic units, etc. with characterization of their functionality; integration of the process, material or equipment into a functional sample. We then work with industrial partners to develop solutions with higher degrees of technological maturity.
The research group also provides for the Centre for Polymer Systems and for cooperation with practice the operation and professional development of spectroscopic and microscopic material characterization laboratories.

The main research objective is to achieve excellence in two areas, namely (1) nanomaterials for sustainability of the material base, transformation of the chemical industry and mitigation of the transition from fossil fuels to renewables, and (2) advanced materials for aviation and space, which represent the most demanding challenges of high-tech application and at the same time sustainability, from which sub-topics of material research, usable in secondary sub-projects with application partners, are traditionally derived and split off.


National Recovery Plan Project

FW10010207 - Intelligent Thermotropic Coatings for Thermal Management of Buildings (in collaboration with Rokospol a.s.), 2024-2026

Project Description

The main goal of the project, carried out in collaboration with the primary recipient, Rokospol a.s., is the research, development, and successful testing of a globally competitive, advanced ecological coating system of a new generation. This system will feature intelligent and repeatable changes in optical properties, which will repeatedly alter in response to temperature changes. As the temperature rises, the light transmission will decrease, and vice versa. This change will be cyclically repeatable. The thermotropic behavior of the system will enable thermal management of buildings, including both facade and roof surfaces, as well as influence the transmission of light and thermal radiation through glass components.

The main outputs of the project will be three proofs of concept and one verified technology. The project will also produce two secondary outputs—articles in peer-reviewed journals.

The project "Intelligent Thermotropic Coatings for Thermal Management of Buildings" is co-financed with state support from the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic under the Program TREND. This project is funded under the National Recovery Plan through the European Recovery and Resilience Facility.

The professional interest of the group focuses on a comprehensive study of processing, production and characterization of rubber to achieve an overall understanding of the influence of individual factors, such as composition of the blends and processing conditions or external degradation agents on the resulting product properties. In the Centre, it is possible to prepare testing samples of mixtures/blends on a calendering line, multi-roller and internal compounder. After complete rheological characterization, it is possible to produce testing specimens in various shapes as well as rubber products from the prepared blends by moulding/ pressing. There is also a co-extrusion rubber line available for preparation of profiles from silicone and other rubber compounds. This line includes a vulcanization chamber, extraction and cutting equipment and on-line measurement of the geometry of the extruded profiles. The domain of the group is a deep professional qualification in the field of theoretical and experimentally-analytical description of mechanisms and mutual structural connections/ relations of fracture behaviour of rubber depending on the effects of degrading mechanical and physical influences. In addition to the usual mechanical and thermal methods, tests on a Vulcometer, a unique Tear and Fatigue Analyzer characterizing the resistance of rubber against spreading of the crack during cyclic fatigue load, and a Chip & Cut device determining the dynamic abrasion of rubber for heavy-duty tires are available for characterization of materials. The Intrinsic Strength Analyzer as the only device determining the energy needed to create a crack, is also available. An integral part of basic and applied research is the characterization of thermal processes in mechanically loaded rubber components by a high-speed thermo-camera. The group also focuses on the development of new rubber testing methods for properties that have not yet been determined, such as in-situ monitoring of the development of heating inside a cyclically loaded rubber body, where a unique test device was developed for this analysis.

Financing

85% of the Centre of polymer systems is financed from European Fund of the Research and Development for Innovations programme, namely the Priority Axis 2 - Regional R&D centres. The remaining 15% is covered by the state budget of the Czech Republic. The remaining expeses which cannot be financed from the above mentioned sources will be covered by the Tomas Bata University in Zlin. The overall project implementation is supervized by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic.
